Secretariat for the Conservation of European Orchids (SCEO)

Dear friends,

On 11th February 1996 delegates of the Dutch, English, Flamish, French, German and Italian working groups on European orchids agreed on the establishment of a co-ordinating organisation: the SECRETARIAT FOR THE CONSERVATION OF EUROPEAN ORCHIDS (SCEO).
The aim of the SCEO is the promotion of co-operation, communication and mutual information between working groups on European orchids. The SCEO will also promote international projects and research for the conservation and protection of European orchids. Other working groups are welcome to join. The SCEO will stimulate the formation of new working groups in countries where no working group exists.
Only working groups may obtain membership. Individuals from countries where no working group exists as well as institutions active with European orchids may be observers.

The first actvities for the near future are:

- collecting all European, national and regional legislative acts and regulations concerning the conservation and protection of European orchids;
- collecting all information on illegal transactions, illegal cultivation experiments and the digging up of European orchids and informing its members and, if necessary, the authorities;
- collecting addresses of experts on nature management and supporting the exchange of experience between interested members of the SCEO;
- compiling all dates of international meetings on European orchids and making this information available to all members and to the parties which informed the SCEO of their meeting.

Other possible fields of work in future are: supporting and co-ordinating mapping activities, stimulating youth activities and compiling and distributing didactic material on European orchids.
All information for and from the member groups will be distributed in the "SCEO Communication Bulletin".

To fulfil our first tasks we ask you for sending us:

- European, national and regional legislative acts and regulations;
- information on illegal transactions, illegal cultivation experiments and the digging up of European orchids;
- addresses of experts on nature management;
- dates of international meetings on European orchids.

Thanking you in advance,
Yours faithfully,

Dirk W. Kapteyn den Boumeester Chairman
